The Las Vegas fire department reported a 3-alarm fire at The Venetian Resort Hotel Casino. Traffic was closed off on Las Vegas Boulevard and Flamingo Road as a result while the fire department handled the fire.

The fire started on Friday at around 8 p.m. with dark smoke and flames coming out of the building.

The Clark County Fire Department said that the fire began after a construction sign (for Phantom of the Opera) that was fastened to a decorative tower on The Venetian blew off because of strong winds and was either overheated by a light or hit a light that sparked an electrical fire.

Flames rose to about 40-feet into the air while thousand of tourists watched from across the street as the fire department put out the fire, which was contained to the exterior of the Venetian.
