Indian casino declared illegal to gamble in

When building a luxurious casino, it is advisable to do it where gambling is legal.

The new Indian casino in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, Kewadin Shores Casino and Hotel, was mistakenly built in an area where gambling is illegal. The resort opened in June and also has restaurants, an indoor pool and a lounge.

The resort cost $36 million, has a 29,000-square-foot casino area, 800 slot machines and 26 gaming tables but all this cannot be put to use because, according to the U.S. government, part of the casino was built on land where Indian gambling is not permitted.

Debates are currently going on among the members of the Sault Ste. Marie of Chippewa Indians. Responsibility for the mistake is being debated, with the blame going back and forth between the current and former chairman.

As a compensation to the yet non-operational casino the tribe is beginning construction of a $2.5 million casino in Mackinac County's Forest Township.

Currently there are 17 Indian casinos in northern Michigan. Two casinos are to open in the next two years in southern Michigan.
