Online gambling soon to be legal in Italy

After Italy tried to ban all IP addresses of online gambling site in February it seems that things have changed.

Much like the UK, Italy is now moving towards regulating the online gambling industry.

Starting on January 1, 2007, it will no longer be illegal for Italian citizens to gamble online in "ability based and fixed betting activities".

The Italian plan will apparently be similar to that of the UK since both monitor the way in which businesses are regulated. The Italian law also guarantees the government 3% of all the gambling revenues that the companies acquire through business with Italian citizens.

This new approach by Italy has raised many questions on whether other countries will soon follow Italy and the UK by regulating the online gambling industry. Governments now have a stable and working model for cooperation and regulation of what was up until recently unthinkable, as aptly demonstrated by Italy itself.

This direction goes against what is happening in the U.S. these days, with gambling industry executives' arrests and with legislative efforts made by the Senate to prohibit online gambling, before its election recess.

US approach the opposite but people will find a way....

It is true that places like live poker rooms in Las Vegas have had an increase in poker players because of the easy access to poker online. Now with the legislation prohibiting banks from processing deposits for online American gambling, this makes it more difficult for Americans to participate in gambling online and limits the poker playing to more live gambling.

However, poker playing online for Americans will not die as there are still plenty of reputable online casinos, poker rooms and sportsbooks, both large and small, where it is business as usual and that are still accepting US Players.

I don't see any change. Online bookmakers still block bookmaking sites. Is anyone else able to bet from Italy?

No change other than

No change other than ladbrokes and hills now have their own Italian sites, but a very limited range of sports and bets available. I see no way into the main bookmakers' UK or other websites.
