The Canadian province of Nova Scotia is pioneering new software that will stop problem gambling even before it has the chance to start, by preventing minors from surfing to gambling websites. The software is specially designed to help parents keep the children off gambling sites.
500 families from the province will first try out the software for free, which according to Margaret McGee, the director of prevention programming for the Nova Scotia gaming Corp., is the only first of its kind in the world. The software called BetStopper, was developed by the corporation with the assistance of an American software company.
While the idea for software that serves as an "Internet cop" is not new and is usually used to block pornography, it is the first time that this kind of software is effectively used to block gambling websites.
With the rising popularity of online gambling, and poker especially, and particularly among minors, a solution that would prevent problem gambling had to be found and applied. According to a press release issued by Nova Scotia Gaming Corp the BetStopper is 94 percent to 99 percent effective in blocking legal and illegal online gambling sites while other software only blocks between 56 to 80 percent.
