In Canada, the Western Hockey League players, coaches and officials were surprised to find out that an off-shore gambling website is accepting bets on their league.
It seems that all is needed to bet on a WHL game's outcome, which player will score first and other bets, is a credit card account at the Vienna based bwin.com. The Web site offers a variety of betting options on hockey from around the world.
Ron Robison, the WHL Commissioner, was troubled to find out about the site, and said that he would do his best to prevent the website from using the WHL name for gambling purposes.
However, since the company and most other gambling companies, are based in countries where it is legal to operate such a website, there is no way to take legal action against them.
Robison said that meetings that will be held this week by the Canadian Hockey League will discuss the matter and decide on an appropriate response.
