A total of $110,000 in fines was levied by Colorado regulators against five casinos for operating illegal or defective slot machines. This is the first time such state penalties were used for these kinds of violations.
The owners of the newest Central City's casino, Century Casino, were fined the largest fine, $87,500 for having five slot machines that enabled gamblers to bet more than $5, Colorado's bet limit.
Four other casinos were exposed by the Division of Gaming to have 47 slot machines that have defective software which caused the machines to erase their games-played memory. Doing so affects the amount of the machines' pay-outs.
According to Don Burmania, spokesman for the Division of Gaming, they are also investigating eight other casinos (out of the state's 46 casinos) that might lead to similar fines.
Since May 30th 2006, casinos in Colorado were no longer required to have their new slot machines examined by the Division of Gaming and instead they were left to ensure that their slot machines comply with state standards, which is eventually checked by regulators within 90 days.
