Online Gambling Companies Insist on Advertising in N.Y.

Online gambling in the United States has recently suffered a major blow with the new law passed by U.S. congress that does not allow banks and credit card companies to process transactions between them and U.S. residents. All this does not stop offshore online gambling companies from advertising heavily in the United States, in spite of repeated warnings from law enforcement officials.

Sportsbook.com, BetUS and other companies continue to advertise regularly in giant billboards in Manhattan and on the Howard Stern's radio show. Online bookies and casinos advertise in Football magazines that can be found in any newsstands.

While the online gambling companies insist that these ads are legal, and through which millions of people were attracted to online gambling, Paul Larrabee, a spokesman for New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer says they are definitely not.

According to Larrabee, since gambling is not legal in New York anyone who markets it may be violating the New York state law.

However, the state rarely prosecutes online gambling advertisers and the media companies that advertise for these companies also insist that what they are doing is completely legal. In 2003, the Justice Department warned that publishers and broadcasters who advertise online gambling sites might be prosecuted for aiding and abetting a crime.
