The Silver Slipper Casino in Mississippi has opened today, and is the first land-based casino on the Gulf Coast that is built completely from scratch. The new $80 million casino features crystal chandeliers eight feet wide hanging over the table games from a ceiling detailed with gold-leaf rosettes. The buffet is more casual, featuring wooden beams bowed like ribs and copper carved like flames.
The Silver Slipper becomes the 10th casino to open on the Gulf Coast since Hurricane Katrina virtually destroyed all 12 gaming operations in the area. Among the casinos that reopened since then are the Imperial Palace, Treasure Bay, Grand Casino, Boomtown, Beau Rivage and Island View.
The casino has 26 table games, 9 poker tables and 1,003 coinless slots. It employs more than 600 people.
Josephine Crawford, the 84-year-old aunt of John Ferrucci, the casino's general manager, will try contributing some of her good luck by being the first person to play a slot machine. She already won $10 million last year, the biggest jackpot in New Jersey history, on a nickel machine in Atlantic City.
