Three illegal gambling operations were raided by the Dallas SWAT team over the weekend. The raids occurred simultaneously and were one of the largest crackdowns on illegal gambling in Texas.
The three raids focused on illegal poker houses and ended up with more than 20 people arrested as promoters of gambling and another 80 were cited for playing the game. Police seized $43,000 in cash from the games and the poker tables were confiscated.Critics of the raids criticized the police and said that their presence was unnecessary and that it could have been avoided if a police cruiser was placed in front of the poker houses. It would have been enough, they protested, to keep the gamblers from entering the place.
The police decided to conduct the raids in order to put a stop to the growing underground gambling industry. The task force had hidden video cameras and used floor plans before raiding each of the locations.
Michael McCoy, one of the players that were caught by police expressed his resentment and said that he believes what happened is not fair:
"You got billions of dollars going through online all across the U.S.", said McCoy. "This is a family game. That's about it."
