WMS, an American slot machine manufacturer, is trying to recover from its 2001 debacle which caused its stocks to crash when software glitches made it possible for players to pile up credits without paying for them. The company has unveiled several new slot machine concepts in last week’s gaming industry convention in Las Vegas, Global Gaming Expo.
Among the new generation of slot machines are server-based slots, which allow players to play against each other and, for the casino, it means all of its slot machines can be operated using a single computer server. This could significantly help casinos reduce labor costs and more quickly retool their slot offerings. For gamblers this means that the game will become more communal, much like roulette.
This new technology may start a slot machine purchasing round by casinos who would want to update their machines to provide their customers with the latest in slot machine games, which include a version of Monopoly and a new spin on Tom Cruise's classic 'Top Gun' movie.
At WMS' technology center on Chicago's North Side the company has been working for more than 4 years on a machine that features “sensory immersion”. These slot machines incorporate the feel of an intense arcade game, where the player sits in a sort of cockpit with rear-mounted speakers that, in a game like Top Gun, for example, sound engine noises, explosions and more, and the player is actually the pilot.
