The Dunedin Casino in New Zealand was closed on Monday and Tuesday after it had its license suspended for not taking adequate action over a problem gambler, who lost more than $6.6 million over a period of three years.
Christine Keenan, gambled away over $6.6 million at the casino over three years, is now serving time in jail for stealing more than $400,000 from her employer in order to pay for her gambling habit.
Last month, after weeks of hearings, the New Zealand Gambling Commission imposed a two day suspension, saying the casino failed to comply with the Gambling Act.
The 2003 Gambling Act contains a stipulation that orders all casinos to do at least the minimum it can to minimize harm caused by gambling, which means that the Dunedin casino had to offer information or advice about problem gambling to Keenan.
