The Pennsylvania state Senate has approved on Tuesday, just before the state legislature adjourned for the year, a bill that will allow slot machine parlors and the planned casinos in Pennsylvania to serve unlimited free alcohol, pending approval by the state's Governor Edward G. Rendell and the House.
The bill's supporters, which passed 22-27, said that the state's casinos and slot machine parlors to compete with gambling establishments in other states, where the drinks are free and unlimited.
The bill was opposed by long-time gambling opponent Paul Clymer, a House Republican, who said that the bill gives gambling establishments an exemption to restrictions on free alcohol other establishments that serve liquor in Pennsylvania comply with.
Currently, restaurants and bars can only serve one free drink per person while race tracks cannot serve any free drinks. The new bill will allow 14 slots parlors, including the ones at racetracks, to serve free drinks during the hours that licensed liquor establishments can serve them, between 7 a.m. and 2 a.m.
