Pennsylvania has taken its first positive step towards the gambling world. On Tuesday, the Mohegan Sun casino at Pocono Downs will open to the public. A thousand invited guests and thousands others are expected to visit Pennsylvania's first casino.
The Mohegan American Indian tribe of Connecticut, the owner of the casino, has spent $70 million to vastly remodel the facility, a former harness racing track, which now has 1,083 slot and video poker machines stretching out on two floors, including three restaurants and a bar.
Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs President Robert Soper described the casino as a "little taste" of what's in store for a much larger slots casino and entertainment complex set for construction sometime next spring.
The state's gambling regulators awarded conditional slots licenses to Mohegan Sun and five other horse racing tracks a few months ago. In December, Regulators are expected to award as many as six more licenses, one an established resort and five to standalone slots parlors.
The state plans to use gambling revenues to cut taxes for homeowners and workers who pay Philadelphia's wage tax and support a rent rebate program for senior citizens.
