Hundreds of British casino employees are to go on strike today due to their 3.5 percent pay increase.
Three hundred employees of Grosvenor Casinos, which operates casinos throughout Britain, are scheduled to demonstrate today, according to the Transport and General Workers' Union. They are protesting an imposed 3.5 percent pay raise after the firm refused to negotiate with the union over a below-inflation offer.
Among the protestors are cashiers, dealers, valets, restaurant workers and other employees at four London casinos that Grosvenor operates.
Rose Keeping, the union's regional organizer, commented on the situation:
"Grosvenor is in the business of making money yet has refused to negotiate with the recognized union over a below-inflation pay offer." Keeping said. "Members are worried about the rising living costs they face in one of the most expensive cities in the world."
According to Keeping, Grosvenor Casinos can afford a larger pay increase this year and should do so if they are interested in having workers on one of the year's busiest nights.
Grosvenor Casinos, which is based in the United Kingdom, is a casino operator and a part of The Rank Group plc. The company operates more than 30 casinos located in major towns and cities across the UK with two sister casinos located in Belgium. Grosvenor Casinos, Hard Rock Casinos, Mecca Bingo and Blue Square.com are the 4 companies that form the Rank Group Gaming Division, which is owned and operated by the Rank Group plc.
