Casino Windsor, in Ontario, Canada, has announced on Friday that the casino will change its name at the beginning of 2008, which will be accompanied by a $345 million revamp.
Among the many changes that will take place are a new 22-story hotel and a 5,000-seat entertainment center and 100,000 square feet of convention space that aims to attract acts similar to Las Vegas casinos. The $345 million project will be funded by the owner of the casino, the Ontario government, which hopes that the new image and facilities will attract more Americans, which the casinos in neighboring Detroit are also competing for.
The struggle against the Detroit casinos, along with the recent smoking ban has lately been causing difficulties to the Casino Windsor. About 80 percent of Casino Windsor's customers come from the U.S., mostly from Michigan. Casino Windsor's other problems are an unfavorable exchange rate, higher fares at the border tunnel and bridge and increased hassles returning to the United States.
Casino Windsor is owned by the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp, any agency of the provincial government. Harrah's Entertainment Inc., which owns the Caesars name as well as a 50 percent interest in the Windsor Casino Ltd. management company, will run the casino.
