German States Postpone Online Gambling Ban

German federal states have decided to postpone a resolution on whether or not to make online gambling illegal. The states leaders met yesterday to discuss the ban, which, if implemented, could sabotage the European plan to regulate gambling in the whole union.

In September, the United States passed a law that virtually bans online gambling in the country, which was devastating for many online gambling companies such as PartyGaming, 888 and Sportingbet.

Three German states, Hesse, Saxony and Bavaria have already implemented a ban and the other states also have reason to ban online gambling in order to protect their monopolized lotteries.

The European Commission is acting to regulate open up the European gambling market, but stands against opposition from local and national governments who, like the German states, also want to preserve their gambling monopolies.

The ban by the three German states was directed mainly at Austrian internet betting firm bwin.com who infringed their monopoly.
