Nevada University Study Questions Imapct of Smoking Bans on Casinos

A new study by the University of Nevada presents different results about the economic impact of smoking bans in the United States than what the gambling industry claims.

Chris Pritsos, Ph.D., chairman of the nutrition department at the University of Nevada, said that a study funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found the number of Nevada gamblers who smoke is the same as the regular rate for the general population – around 21 percent.

University of Nevada's Nutrition Department provides instruction, research and community-based education programs to promote optimal nutritional health and safe food handling.

Researchers say the study undermines the casino industry's claims about the harm smoking bans would cause casinos. According to the casinos, 70 percent of gamblers are smokers. The American Gaming Association says that casinos suffer major revenue loss in places where smoking has been banned.
