A new internal report by the British Police's Gaming Unit is putting the government's plans to establish Las Vegas-style super casino under new scrutiny, saying that they would increase crime and antisocial behavior.
The secret report contradicts the government's stand, headed by the Culture Secretary, Tessa Jowell, that the new casinos would not cause a rise in crime or problem gambling. Jowell has argued that the casinos would benefit the country and is supposed to name the site of the first super-casino in two weeks. Currently, the leading nominee is the Millennium Dome in London.
The report was written by Britain's top police officer responsible for gambling, Detective Inspector Darren Warner of the Metropolitan Police's Gaming Unit. Warner was asked to research the matter and submit his conclusions to consultant PricewaterhouseCoopers, which was condutcing a study into the social impact of a super-casino at the Millennium Dome. Even though the report is dated March 2006, it has not been made public until now.
