A survey that was released yesterday finds that businesses in the UK lose £300 million each year in lost productivity due to employees that gamble online during work hours.
According to the research, released by business and technology consultancy Morse, almost one-third of office workers admit to gambling online when they should be working or know a colleague who did. Morse surveyed 664 office workers and found that the online gambler is likely to be male and almost half of the gamblers were between the ages of 25 and 34.
Morse says office workers spend a day and half a year making bets. Since most businesses do not use the same disciplinary action for online gambling as they do for taking unnecessary time off.
The research also discovered that office workers that participate in online gambling are spending 11.6 percent of their average weekly salary on this habit. For comparison, the average household in the UK spend 6.4 percent of their weekly salary on fresh vegetables and 5.2 percent on fresh fruit.
