Indiana Casinos May be Required to Test Gambers' Sobriety

An Indiana Senator aims to have casinos make sure their customers are not under the influence of drugs or alcohol when accepting their bets or giving them credit.

Senator Brent Waltz filed Senate Bill 31 following a man from Corbin Kentucky filed a law suit against the Caesars Indiana casino in Harrison County, after they gave him a $75,000 credit even though he claims he was visibly drunk at the time.

In a single nigh in September 2004, developer Jimmy Vance lost all this and after several of his payments checks bounced, Caesars sued him in order to retrieve the money, plus interest, legal fees and court costs.

According to Senator Waltz the event made him understand that casinos should be forced to make sure that their customers are not under the influence before providing them with more than a $1,000 credit.

Waltz clarifies in an interview that his proposed bill does not limits a person's ability to play and the player can withdraw as much money from his personal account as he desires. The proposal's goal, as Waltz would have it, is to make it possible for a gambler to borrow money from a casino only if he is sober.

Holly Thomson, a spokeswoman for the American Gaming Association, said she is not familiar with any similar laws in other states. According to the association, casino employees are trained to notice players who are not sober or may be problem gamblers.

Indiana casinos are already prohibited from providing gamblers with free drinks unless they receive a state permit to do so during a special event.
