An Indiana man who, along with his wife, stole $300,000 from the former Northwest Indiana District Council of Carpenters and blamed it on his gambling addiction, is facing one year in prison.
After pleading guilty in his trial last week, 54-year-old Robert Collins from Hobart, Indiana, received a sentence of one year in prison even though he could have gotten up to 18 months in prison. He was also ordered to pay back all the money to the union, at least a $100 each month.
Collins' wife, Sally, 51, was a bookkeeper for the union and also pleaded guilty to the embezzlement is expected to be sentenced later this year.
Collins was not sentenced to the maximum penalty mainly due to the fact that he has a pathological gambling addiction. According to therapist Gina Fricke, Collins moved to Omaha, Nebraska, where he has held three jobs and regularly sees a counselor for his gambling addiction.
