Manchester has been chosen as the location of Britain's first Las Vegas-style super-casino. The license will allow Manchester to build a 1,250 unlimited-jackpot gaming machines casino.
The favorites for the win, however, were Blackpool and London's former Millennium Dome. Previous assessments had put Manchester last among the seven bidders for the super-casino, while all local government bodies backed Blackpool.
The casino was seen as the catalyst for regenerating and reversing Blackpool's declining economy. It had been hoped the new gambling attraction would have created up to 3,400 jobs bring in hundreds of millions of inward investment.
The Casino Advisory Panel also granted "large" casinos licenses to Great Yarmouth, Hull, Leeds, Middlesbrough, Milton Keynes, Newham, Solihull and Southampton.
Licenses for "small" casinos to were granted to Bath and North East Somerset, Dumfries and Galloway, East Lindsey, Luton, Scarborough, Swansea, Torbay and Wolverhampton.
Manchester's bid organizers said the super-casino would regenerate a poor area in the east of the city, promising a £265 million investment and 2,700 jobs. The casino will be based located near the City of Manchester Stadium.
The proposed casino resort will also include an entertainment complex with a multi-purpose arena, a swimming pool, restaurants, bars, a nightclub and a hotel.
