One of the largest casinos in the world, the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Connecticut, is about to get even bigger. The casino has announced a major expansion plan that will be completed in the next three years.
The tribe's gaming officials anticipate that the $740 million will attract many new players, mainly young people and Asians. The new expansion, "Project Horizon", includes an addition of a 38-story hotel with 1,000 rooms which will open in 2010 and the House of Blues music hall with a capacity of 1,500, which will open in 2009.
The new hotel will help with providing additional accommodations to the existing 1,200 rooms that are 93 percent full on an average night. By the spring of 2008, new restaurants and shops are scheduled to open and also 964 new slot machines will be added to the current 6,000 machines.
The 10-year-old Mohegan Sun, has approximately 10,000 employees and expects to add about another 2,000 in the next five years. The tribe's casino attracts 35,000 visitors daily and has yearly revenue of $1.5 billion.
The Casino officials are also trying to bring in more young players by opening a 45-table poker room. The poker room at Mohegan Sun closed in 2003 to make room for more slot machines, but the growth in poker's popularity in the last few years, following televised tournaments and online poker rooms, have caused the casino to reopen it.
