NCAA Fights Gambling Among Student-Athletes

The NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) has launched a new website narrated by NBA star Clark Kellogg that advises schools against putting up gambling ads in sports arenas and having "Las Vegas Night" fundraisers.

Last year the FBI had talks with players at the NCAA men's basketball tournament, after some athletes received messages from gamblers that wanted inside information. Ever since a 2003 survey showed that a considerable number of athletes are involved with gambling, the NCAA has decided to fight the phenomenon.

Kellogg tells student-athletes in a video that there are two things they cannot do: betting on college or pro sporting events or provide information to anyone who does. According to the NCAA, the athletes can't wager on online sports books, in pools or even on games that do not involve their colleges. They are also instructed not to disclose injuries and other inside information to gamblers.

The NCAA launched dontbetonit.org on Friday, which was also the first day of the NCAA convention, an annual event in which college sport's governing body decides on rule changes and conducts talks on student-athlete issues.
