Star Cruises, the third-largest cruise operator in the world, is planning a new casino and hotel resort in Macau, called “Resorts World at Macau”.

Star Cruises announced today that it will build the new project with a total investment of around $602 million. The Resorts World at Macau is a joint venture of the cruise line operator with Singapore-listed Genting International.

The hotel’s casino will be operated by Sociedade de Jogos de Macau, which is owned by casino tycoon Stanley Ho. Until 2002, Ho enjoyed a government-granted monopoly over gambling and casinos in Macau. In recent years, other companies were allowed to build and operate casinos in Macau, such as the Wynn Macau, Sands Macau and others.

Hong Kong-listed shares of Star Cruises went up 48 percent on Tuesday, following the announcement.
