An Iowa lawmaker is pushing for a change in the rules dealing with the state's casinos, which require casinos to operate on water.
Iowa's law says a casino must be built above water; even if it's within 1,000 feet of a natural body of water. But with the trend moving to land casinos some lawmakers say it's time for a change.
Senator Mike Connolly has introduced a bill which will scrap the requirement that casinos be located on water.
"It's basically a foolish and costly item still in the code," said Connolly. "So we're going to go in there and delete that, make an attempt to delete it."
There are 17 state-licensed casinos in Iowa, not including casinos operated by Indian tribes. The Iowa Gaming Association, a lobbying group for the casino industry, argues that a rule change would reduce the expense of putting water under the gaming floor, freeing up money for other amenities.
A debate in the full house and senate will probably come in the next few weeks.
