New Attempt to Legalize Sports Betting in New Jersey

With today's Super Bowl in mind, a New Jersey senator is renewing efforts to bring legalized sports betting to the State.

Sen. Raymond Lesniak said Friday that he is betting that sports betting will soon be legal in New Jersey.

"With the biggest sporting event of the year taking place this weekend, it's naive to think that sports betting isn't taking place right now in the Garden State," said Lesniak. "But because of an act of Congress, we've surrendered sports betting to organized crime, offshore casinos and Las Vegas. Why should millions of dollars go to Las Vegas, offshore casinos and the mob?"

Sports betting is currently only legal in Delaware, Montana, Nevada and Oregon but Lesniak plans to introduce a bill that would allow New Jersey voters to choose whether sports betting should be legal in New Jersey and to request Congress to annul the federal law that restricts it.

While The NFL and NBA have opposed legalized sports betting in New Jersey, supporters of sports betting estimate the state earn up to $8 million in additional annual casino tax revenue and plus increase the number of visitors to Atlantic City casinos.

That makes a lot of sense

It only makes sense that in a state that allows gambling, it would be legal to have sports betting. How is it different than "regular" gambling?
