A record of 38.9 million people visited Las Vegas in 2006, a 0.9 percent rise from 2005. The forecast, according to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, is that even more people are expected to visit the city in 2007.
The authority projected 39.3 million people would come to Las Vegas in 2007. The increased number of visitors is helped partly by 5,000 new hotel rooms, which brings the total number of hotel rooms in Las Vegas to about 137,600 and around171,000 rooms are expected to be available by 2010.
Last year, hotel inventory dropped 0.4% due to more closures of hotels than openings. The Boardwalk and Stardust casino-hotels closed on the Las Vegas Strip, while off the Strip, Station Casinos Inc.'s Red Rock and Michael Gaughan's South Point casino-hotels opened up.
According to the authority, the average daily rate for hotel rooms went up 16% to $120, slightly higher than the average in the top 25 U.S. cities, but lower than New York at $240.
