A couple from Miami, Florida, who were charged with running an unlawful online gambling operation that handled more than $3.3 billion worth of bets over a period of more than two years, have pleaded guilty to felony charges.
Daniel B. Clarin, 32, from Miami pleaded guilty to enterprise corruption and a violation of New York State's Organized Crime Control Act. His wife, Melissa Clarin, 31, pleaded guilty to fourth-degree conspiracy.
Queens Supreme Court Justice Stephen Knopf, indicated that he would probably sentence Mr. Clarin to between two and one-third to seven years in prison and order him to forfeit $254,356. Mrs. Clarin would be sentenced to a three-year conditional discharge, conditioned that she forfeits $72,508 in illegal earnings. Sentencing was set to April 26.
The couple was a major part of an illegal, global gambling operation that grossed millions of dollars by taking wagers on a wide variety of sporting events ranging from horseracing, football, baseball, basketball and hockey to NASCAR and professional tennis. The proceeds were unlawfully earned through illegal casinos, shell corporations and bank accounts around the world.
