Millionaire Sues Casino for Losing $30 Million

A Multi-millionaire is suing an Australian casino for letting him bet and lose $30 million by luring him to play even though he has legally self-banned himself from casinos.

Harry Kakavas, a property developer from Gold Coast, Australia, has launched legal proceedings against the Crown Casino in Melbourne, claiming they offered him luxuries such as a private jet and a penthouse suite in order to tempt him back to the baccarat table, despite a self-imposed ban from every major casino in Australia.

Kakavas is suing for negligence, unconscionable conduct and breaches of the Casino Control Act.

After losing several hundred thousand dollars at Crown Casino between 1993 and 1995, and realizing he had a gambling problem, Kakavas issued a legally binding self-imposed ban from every major casino in Australia, including the Crown Casino.

He said he was still subject to the order when he was contacted by the vice-president of Crown's VIP gaming services, Ishen Ratnam, in 2004.

His claim will be heard in May.
