As was earlier mentioned by this reporter, Rennich, a 26 year veteran of the Atlantic City casino industry has been one of the leading proponents to eliminate the statewide smoking exclusion exception which allowed the casino floors to be the only public venue in the state to allow smoking. Recent efforts by industry employees coaxed the city officials to post a 75-25 percent split on casino floor space nonsmoking to smoking.
Rennich currently has a lawsuit pending against the Tropicana casino because although a non-smoker, he contracted lung cancer while an employee. His discharge by the latin themed casino, although as one of hundreds of recent layoffs, came about even though he had received a satisfactory to excellent recent evaluation.
This reporter had the opportunity to observe the benefit and it was noteworthy in that several hundred people showed up along with several elected officials, including former Atlantic City mayor James Whelan, now state assemblyman. Whelan at the time of Rennich’s dismissal had called for an investigation into the Tropicana’s employment policies as they have cut their work force significantly since being purchased last year.
