Trump Plaza Files Objection on Union Vote

The Trump Plaza Casino filed an objection with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) in regards to the Dealer Union election held Saturday March 31.

Claiming ‘laboratory conditions’ had been spoiled by a meeting attended by members of the state government including state senator James McCullough and James Whelan, state assemblyman. Additionally, U.S. Rep Robert Andrews (1st district) was also in attendance.

The meeting was an official count of the pledge cards signed by dealers at the Trump Plaza casino. The government officials had asserted after the tally process that an overwhelming majority had expressed a desire to be represented by the UAW as bargaining agents.

Trump Plaza’s objection filed hours before a deadline was that the presence of the government officials misrepresented to the dealers that the government and The National Labor Relations Board were for union representation.

In response, McCullough has called the filing a ‘stall’ to delay the ratification process.

Assemblyman Whelan has stated that the event was simply a normal tally process and that there were a small number of dealers there.

At the same time a non-profit organization has filed an almost mirror image of the Plaza’s objection and asserts interference caused by the aforementioned vote tally meeting. Based in Virginia, The National Right to Work Legal Defense Foundation organization says it has had no contact with the Trump Plaza over this.

The Trump Organization has spared no expense as it has retained the services of Fox Rothchild LLP, a law firm which states openly on its website as one of its services:

Maintain a pro-employee working environment, which minimizes the risk of a successful union organization drive."

In conclusion, at a time when the New Jersey casino industry is facing increasing challenges from gambling allowed in nearby states (Pennsylvania the most recent) it might behoove both management and the dealers to settle their differences in an expeditious manner to forestall the loss of market share.

Atlantic City casinos will certainly face turmoil within a week as their blanket exemption to smoking on their gaming floors comes to an end and smokers find themselves confined to an area equivalent at most to 25 percent of the former floor space of their casino.
