Long lines were at the ticket counter and the security checkpoint Thursday evening, as every seat was sold on Spirit Airlines' first flight to Las Vegas from Atlantic City.
Passengers came from southern New Jersey, Philadelphia and even upstate New York for the privilege of riding Spirit to Las Vegas.
And almost all of them used the same three words as the reason they chose to travel from Atlantic City International: It was cheaper. Several people paid $215.00 for the round trip price. Quick searches on the internet showed the cheapest Philadelphia to Vegas flight being 450.00.
Spirit Airlines has one trip daily from each city.
Initial response to the new direct flight route has been ‘very promising’, said a Spirit executive.
As many residents in the south Jersey area have relatives in the casino industry in Las Vegas due to transfers the airline has a built-in customer base. Spirit has had a flight to Las Vegas for some years now; however there was a connection through Detroit.
Discussions have already started as whether a second daily flight should be considered.
