May proved to be an unlucky month for the Atlantic City casino industry.
Casinos in Pennsylvania and New York were blamed as the primary cause of the drop. A city government enforced smoking ban on 75% of each properties floor space may have contributed however it was a minor factor compared to competition from other jurisdictions near the shore resort.
Speculation is that this year will show the first decline in the history of gambling in the town.
The Tropicana showed the greatest decrease of about 12 percent; however due to construction perhaps one quarter of its slot machines were offline. All the Trump properties showed a decline. Borgata, Harrah’s and Caesars all showed gains from a year ago. With the closing of the Sands factored into totals the decline was less than 2 percent.
