Researchers at the University of Alberta in the U.S. are pitting their specially designed poker computer against two of the best professional poker players in the world.
The two poker players that will take on the university's newly developed Polaris program are Ali Eslami and Phil "The Unabomber" Laak. They will play 2,000 hands of Texas Hold'em against the computer, which the programmers are certain will beat them.
According to the Polaris team, they have developed a way to take luck out of the process of determining how good humans are relative to the computer program.
The way Polaris is built is very sophisticated. It is made up of several computer programs with different characteristics. One program is very aggressive, for example, but ignores the different playing styles that opponents have.
Another program is able to learn from the strengths and weaknesses of other players and better itself accordinlgy. The programs are even able to do the most human thing - bluffing.
The game between the players and the machine is scheduled for July 23 and 24.
