WSOP 2007 Opens With Record Breaking Attendance

The 37th World Series of Poker opened on Friday, June 1, at Harrah's Rio Hotel and Casino, located just off the Las Vegas Strip.

The WSOP 2007 attendance did not suffer from the online gambling ban that the U.S. initiated in October 2006. Since many WSOP competitors were qualified online, a low attendance was expected for this year's tournament.

Event #3 of the 2007 WSOP drew the third-highest player attendance in poker history. Saturday's $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em event had almost 3,000 registrants.

Even though the WSOP's opening event, the $5,000 Mixed Limit Hold'em tournament, had a much higher buy-in fee than the $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em, it still had more participants. While more average players could afford this tournament, the big-name pros were less interested in the combination of the big field of players along with low-key buy-in.
