Poker has been classified as a game of skill by a Danish municipal court last week. The court ruled that winning or losing in poker is based on how much skill a player possesses and not on how lucky the player is.
"You can win in poker based on being clever enough to hide your strategy, even though you might have a fairly poor hand", said the judge.
Last year, Frederik Hostrup, chairman of the Danish Poker Association, had charges of illegal gambling filed against him for arranging poker tournaments that had an entry fee, which constitutes a vio0lation of Danish gambling laws.
Hostrup claimed he was not guilty because poker could not be considered gambling and along with his lawyer set out to repel the charges against him by proving that poker is a game of skill.
The court acquitted Hostrup of the charges. According to the verdict, the ruling was due to the cost of the tournament including a "limited deposit" and the fact that there also had to be competence in order to win.
