The 2007 World Series of Poker is over and there's a new poker champion. Jerry Yang from Temecula, California won the $8.25 million WSOP Main Event 1st prize today.
The 39-year-old poker player is a Laos-born psychologist became the chip leader on Tuesday afternoon, busting out seven of the eight other players one by one at the final table.
Yang qualified to the main event via a $225 satellite tournament at the Pechanga Resort & Casino in his home town. He has been playing poker for only two years.
Yang said before the tournament that he would donate 10 percent of his winnings to charity, including Feed the Children, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, , Loma Linda University and the Ronald McDonald House.
At the final table, Yang went heads up against Tuan Lam, a 40-year-old professional online poker player from Mississauga, Ontario. Yang had a huge chip advantage - 104.5 million in chips to while Lam had only 23 million chips.
On the last hand, at around 4 a.m., with a huge pot, Lam moved all-in with an ace and queen of diamonds and Yang called with pocket eights.
