Second Life, thevirtual environment developed and operated by Linden Lab, has announced a ban on gambling on July 25.
Second Life gets inline with the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act the anti-gambling law that was passed last October, which prohibits online gambling sites from taking money from US residents.
The gambling decision is the latest in a series of steps Linden Lab has taken to crack down on adult entertainment in Second Life, driven, at least in part, by the law in the nations in which it operates.
Second Life has become a real internet phenomenon, with about 8.5 million members. It seems that Second Life's main function is to provide entertainment and to allow people to escape their real life and live a different one, which they themselves create and control.
From now on people won’t be able to gamble and to win real money from their Second Life’s playing casino games such as slots, roulette poker and others.
"Because there are a variety of conflicting gambling regulations around the world, we have chosen to restrict gambling in Second Life," Linden Lab said in a press release.
"Because this is an evolving area of law, we may continue to adjust and clarify this policy as we receive feedback from the community and from legal authorities or as new regulations, industry practices and technology solutions come into effect."
