With the World Series of Poker nearing its final day, it becomes clear that the 2007 WSOP, like in previous years will probably not be won by a professional poker player.
Scotty Nguyen, a 44-year-old native of Vietnam, won the 1998 WSOP, before the WSOP Main Event was flooded with players who qualified at online poker sites, is the last high profile professional player left in the main event. But Nguyen isn't complaining, and unlike poker legend Doyle Brunson, who said that a high-profile pro might never again win the Main Event, he is aiming to do exactly that.
"He is wrong, baby. I'm going to prove him wrong," said Nguyen. "It's my year and my time. I have a chance to repeat," Nguyen said.
This year's main event had 19 former champions, including Doyle Brunson, Gus Hansen, Phil Hellmuth and Johnny Chan, who were eliminated on the first day.
The current chip leader is Lee Childs with 16,535,000 in chips, followed by Tuan Lam with 14,945,000 chips and Lee Watkinson with 12,975,000 chips.
