Judge Allows Pennsylvania Casinos to Remain Open Despite State Shutdown

A Pennsylvania judge granted an injunction yesterday allowing Pennsylvania's casinos to remain open despite a furlough of state employees.

Senior Judge Keith B. Quigley allowed casinos to remain open despite Gov. Ed Rendell announcement of at least a one-day furlough starting today.

In a special meeting on Sunday night, Pennsylvania's Gaming Control Board voted to issue an order shutting down the casinos in the event of Revenue Department furloughs that disable the department's central computer system. The vote's results were 7-0.

The board held the vote due to the fact that Pennsylvania's 9,907 slot machines are hooked into that same computer system. Employees who oversee the system are among the almost 1,700 Revenue workers facing furloughs.
