Detroit's casinos, the MGM Grand Detroit, Greektown and MotorCity are spending $1.5 billion to build new hotels in the city to attract tourists and become a srious gambling and entertainment center.
So far Detroit casinos relied mostly on day-trippers and coach tours from neighboring states and Canada for business. With the new hotels, their 1,200 rooms and large convention space they will be able to address new, more up-scale, clientele.
MGM Grand is constructing a new $765 million resort which will offer a spa and a 17-story hotel with electronic concierges in every room and restaurants operated by celebrity chefs Wolfgang Puck and Michael Mina will be opened in the new hotel.
Greektown Casino's $475 million expansion of the existing casino, located in an ethnic district of the same name includes a 20-story hotel which opens next year.
MotorCity Casino is spending $275 million on a luxury 17-story hotel, opening this fall. The first phase of the resort's casino floor was opened in June.
