Televisions advertisements for the gambling industry during sporting events will be allowed in the United Kingdom, starting September 1. The catch is they will only be allowed after 9 p.m.
After the British government made a U-turn on the liberalization of gambling laws, which would have allowed the gambling industry to advertise on TV, radio and in print media, subject to UK advertising rules, James Purnell, the Culture Secretary, succeeded in imposing a 9 p.m. watershed on such advertisements.
He has made an exception for sporting events screened earlier in the day, to the dismay of campaigners. In exchange the gambling industry will commit in its new code to remove any logos from children’s replica football shirts
In return, the gambling industry says it will include a commitment in its new voluntary code of conduct not to include the logos on children’s replica football shirts.
This latest restriction jeopardizes multimillion pound Premier League sponsorship deals.
Gambling sites operating from outside of the UK - the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Gibraltar, the Isle of Man, Alderney and other white-listed countries, will still be allowed to advertise in the UK.
