Harrah’s Entertainment, owner of four casinos in Atlantic City, decided with a September 15 deadline for providing plans for an enclosed smoke free section on its casino floors to make its gambling floorspace fume free.
The company has decided to build parlors which gamblers may enter to take a smoke break. At this point it is unclear if the parlors will be in the casino and be enclosed and ventilated or located just off the floor.
Spokesmen have stated no employee will be forced to give waiter service within the parlor. They may ‘volunteer.’
No casino has decided to go completely smoke-free. The action taken by Harrah’s effectively makes its casino floors smoke free if they implement their plans as publicly stated.
Tropicana plans to follow Harrah’s plans, while Trump Casinos plan to build enclosed smoking areas on its floor spaces. The Borgata has not revealed its plans yet. Atlantic City Hilton plans to build parlors and enclose part of its gaming space.
The casino control commission must approve all plans which will take at least eight weeks. Construction once approved may take one to three months.
