The results of the Gambling Prevalence Study, which will be published at the end of the month, will show that there is a rising problem of gambling addiction in the UK.

According to Times Online, the number of problem gamblers now stands at 500,000. The latest survey, which was done in 1999, estimated that there were 275,000 to 370,000 problem gamblers in the UK.

This confirms other research which has found a considerable rise in online gambling and that there are almost a million regular online gamblers in Britain, which accounts for almost a third of the European total. These players spend about £1,000 a year on average on online gambling, or over £1 billion a year.

Last month Britain's Culture, Media and Sport Secretary, James Purnell, initiated a new law, which came into effect on September 1st and sets rules for the registration and licensing of online gambling companies in Britain. The good news for the gaming industry however, is that TV ads are also allowed, but only after 9 p.m.
