A report issued today by the Gambling Commission in the United Kingdom shows that problem gambling in the country has not increased in the past eight years.

The survey even shows that following a decline in the National Lottery sales, the numbers of gamblers dropped from 72 percent in 1999 to 68 percent in 2007.

The number of problem gambling in the UK has not changed very much, with only 0.6 percent of the adult population is defined as problem gamblers. When the last report was issued in 1999 it presented the same percentage.

The survey measured the number of active gamblers, estimated the range of problem gambling, the factors associated with it and examined how the public views gambling.

Commission chairman Peter Dean said more than 99 percent of adults who gambled have done so without negative consequences but there are still 250,000 "problem gamblers" in the UK.

The Gambling Prevalence Study questioned 9,003 people between September 2006 and March 2007 about 17 types of gambling - from scratch cards to casinos.
