Just hours before an important game, players of football team Kaizer Chiefs narrowly avoided being caught in a casino attack where armed robbers fired several shots into the casino of the Tusk Mmabatho Resort in Mafikeng.
According to police reports, the robbers were armed with 9mm pistols and R-4 rifles. They walked brazenly into the casino, fired 11 shots, and threatened the tellers and slot operators.
One of the security staff at the casino said “We spotted them before they even entered the casino and activated our security. No money was taken or punters robbed. The whole thing lasted less than two minutes.”
The Kaizer Chiefs were due to be playing a tournament at the resort, but were observing an early curfew, and were unaware of the attack until the next morning when their coach, Muhsin Ertugral told them about it.
A source for the Chiefs said “That place was rough on Friday. There was loud music but we were away from it in our section. In the other part, people were running around mad,” He also accused the casino's security staff of being lax, saying "anyone can go in there".
The players for the Chiefs were put up in a wing away from the main attractions and had a security guard on duty 24 hours a day.
