A health warning has been issued this Thursday by Arizona health regulators regarding the Paulson brand of poker chips, which may contain high levels of lead.
The Paulson poker chips are used in many casinos, and can also be bought at retail for home use.
The warning came the day after a TV station in Phoenix broadcast a story about the possibility of contamination. The TV statoin apparently tested around 200 chips in a private laboratory, and found that all of them exceeded the surface lead limits set by the EPA.
The CEO of Paulson has issued a statement saying that the chips had been re-formulated to contain a much lower amount of lead. They also say that they object to any implication that the chips could be a potential health hazard when they are used as intended.
Lead can be dangerous for young children, but most of the danger comes from eating, drinking, or inhaling lead particles. As long as the poker chips are well cared for, and not given to children who may, for example, put them in their mouths, the danger should be minimal.
