Man Surrenders After Showboat Casino Standoff

A six-hour standoff outside the Showboat-Casino Hotel came to a safe end yesterday. A masked man held police at bay from a shuttle bus, blaming the casino for the suicide of his brother, and demanding $3 million. The man eventually surrendered peacefully.

The masked man claimed that his brother was an employee of the casino who had developed a gambling problem, although a search of the personnel records of the casino did not bring up anyone with the name that was provided.

The attacker, 37 year old David B. Kilkeary, from Crofton, Md., surrendered just after 4 a.m on Wednesday morning, and no guns or bombs were found. The conflict began at 10:30 p.m on Tuesday, when reports came in of a man with a gun on a shuttle bus outside of the casino. The driver scuffled with the man, but was not hurt. A passenger escaped just after the conflict began, and three other passengers who had stayed on the vehicle were released a short time later.

Kilkeary had placed a suspicious looking device in the men's room of the casino, but further investigation showed that it was a fake.

Kilkeary, who has already served time in prison for robbing a Maryland bank, now faces charges of threatening to kill people and damage property, and obstructing commerce by extortion. He could face up to 20 years in prison and fines of up to $250,000.
