Daniel Booth, a 19-year-old student and part time supermarket worker, has won $96,000 (AU) in a poker tournament in Adelaide, Australia.
Booth has only been playing poker seriously for the last five months, and this was his first live cash tournament.
The tournament offered a total prize pool of $340,000 and included entrants from all over the world. Many had paid the $3,000 buy in, but some, including Booth, had won entry through a series of regional poker tournaments.
Booth said “I never dreamed I would win this tournament especially since I was up against so many of the world's best, [...] I've only recently started playing poker and taking it seriously since the poker league stated in Adelaide pubs and hotels in June of this year.”
The prize was presented by World Series of Poker 2005 main event winner Joe Hachem, who was knocked out of the tournament on Saturday night, but stayed around to present the cash to the winner.
Hachem said “It's fantastic that such a young man who is playing his first live poker tournament for cash triumphs.”
Another local, Adam Cusenza, took the second prize, worth $58,000 – while Chris Tau from New Zealand took the $40,000 prize with third place.
